Transforming place & infrastructure

We’re passionate about improving communities by partnering with public bodies on designing and building policies, products and services to transform the built, natural and economic environment that underpins them.

Discover our impact

Our work in transforming infrastructure has explored the ways in which data and user-centred design can make lasting and meaningful change for people, their wider communities and our planet.

Designing and testing a digital site notice

Working with Camden Council, supporting them to design a site notice that encourages residents to get involved with local planning developments to participate and have their say on shaping the future of their place.

Place and infrastructure: thinking about digital transformation in a new way

Digital transformation is more than gadgets or sensors—it's about the intentional and adaptive design of policy, planning and project delivery to achieve user and economic outcomes.

Let's work together

We're a bunch of passionate experts with a flair for the extraordinary. Our team is led by seasoned pros who have mastered the art of delivering standout place and infrastructure projects, digital transformations and innovative digital products. We understand the unique challenges public bodies face that shape and transform our neighbourhoods, towns, countryside and cities.

Our obsession with design, data and technology stems from hands-on experience leading groundbreaking projects across the built environment and net zero industries and government. With our unique blend of backgrounds, skills, and expertise, we're ready to embrace the big ambitions at the intersection of policy and digital innovation.

We want to partner with organisations looking to make bold decisions and deliver real change.

Let us support you in the following areas:

Designing products and services

Digital products and services can improve the governance, delivery and planning of place and infrastructure. We work alongside leaders, policymakers and service owners to understand the problem space they are trying to address. After learning more about internal delivery mechanisms, our digital and data specialists focus on understanding user needs and technology opportunities. We can bring your ideas to life through prototyping and rapid testing to give you confidence that you’re building the right solutions.

We’re supporting Open Digital Planning, a community of forward-thinking Local Planning Authorities, to create a Digital Planning Register and Site Notice to help the public engage with planning applications.

Transforming organisations

Place and infrastructure organisations need to rethink their structure, systems and ways of working when bringing digital methods into traditional delivery practices. They must become more agile, adaptive and innovative. Our specialists in organisational design and technology can add value from reviewing your technology stacks to evaluating your approach to hiring and building internal capability. We’re people-centred and are adept at working with organisations to design and scale programmes for transformation and change.

Designing policy

Too often, policy involves researching problems, writing down a solution and hoping it will succeed. With better data and digital tools, we can design policy in more evidence-led, human-centric and iterative ways. We help teams and organisations understand the journey of a policy from intent to delivery and analyse the range of levers available to you (from policy and regulation to data-informed services, to behavioural nudges) to implement it.

We supported DLUHC and HMLR to take a systems view of the home buying and selling process, allowing them to gain investment in the 2023 Autumn statement.

Enabling evidence-based investment

Funding and investment are some of the most important levers policymakers have to enact change. But too often, there is a gap between how funding is designed, delivered and what people need to access and use funds to implement change. With better data, there is an opportunity to design funds in a way that both meets end-user needs and delivers economic impact. We work with leaders to understand, test and improve the logic behind investment decisions. Partner with us to write business cases, create geospatial analysis and conduct market analysis. Together, we can inform future decisions by creating the seamless digital services needed to apply, assess and evaluate investments.

Building data infrastructure

Many organisations struggle with poor-quality data, opaque models and wrong insights while feeling overwhelmed by the enormity of AI. By working with creators and owners of data, we can give you access to data and build your confidence in using it. We also build data platforms for collection, analysis and presentation, and help you manage the ethics and risks of new approaches. Let’s work towards making better policy and investment decisions by helping you draw on our increasingly data-rich methods.

Convening and engaging communities

Poor design and delivery of local citizen, community and consultee engagement are major sources of delays in place and infrastructure projects. It’s also a missed opportunity to draw on the knowledge and insights of local people, enabling the co-design of richer and locally embraced projects. We work with organisations to identify where engagement can improve place and infrastructure projects, designing and facilitating dialogue between citizens and stakeholders.

We run Citizens Assemblies for many local authorities including Barnet Council to answer  ‘How can we contribute to addressing the climate crisis?’ and inform a key part of Barnet Council’s Net Zero Action Plan
